words and music by Bruce Baldwin, copyright 2006

I imagine primal rhythms
as a symbol for your naked form,
like a central pulse to guide me
through the silence, dancing in the storm.
I listen for your strong heartbeat;
it echoes inside my head,
louder than any words we said.

Like the light that travels blindly
a thousand lifetimes from a distant star,
I can hear you singing softly.
I never have to wonder where you are.
So I can get lost in rhythm
and syncopated lines.
It's better than simply keeping time.

I am listening,
and I hear it all around
I am listening
to one heartbeat's sound

In the darkness, I was wishing
for a song to occupy my dream.
Then I heard you there beside me,
a simple drumbeat bursting at the seams.
I listened to your strong heartbeat.
It sang like a violin
It brought me back to Earth again.
